Workshop for Biology Teachers
at Corning Community College

A one-day workshop held annually at Corning Community College (CCC) on Columbus Day weekend.  Topics vary by year; past topics have included biodiversity, DNA, and evolution.

This year each lab session will have two separate tracks.  Please be sure to indicate on your registration which track you would like to attend.

8:30 - 9:45Introductions, Purpose, and Keynote Address - Dan Buckley:  The Microbial Earth

  • High School:
    Microbes are everywhere [introduction to basic techniques: aseptic technique, serial dilution, spread plate, streak plate)
    Making Media (84 K)
    Streaking a Plate (48 K)]
    Microbial Symbiosis [rotate through 3 stations, 20 minutes at each station
  • Middle School:
    Can microbes tell the difference? (yeast and various sugars)
    Let's get small (size models of microorganisms)
    Micro-composting (composting in a soda bottle)
