New York City Equipment Training Workshops
These workshops will be held at Weill Medical College to train and update participants in the use of the CIBT DNA and Protein Kits. The classrooms are located on the second floor of 1300 York Ave, New York. You may sign up for Saturday (DNA), Sunday (Protein), or both. Participation qualifies you to borrow the related equipment from CIBTs Equipment Lending Library. Please note that each day can only accomodate 20 participants.
Breakfast, lunch, and in-service credit will be provided.
DNA Profiling
Saturday, October 13, 2007, 9 am - 3 pm (registration starts at 8:15 am)
In-Service Hours: 6
During this session, teachers will be introduced to the use of DNA in forensics. The CIBT lab uses actual DNA and restriction enzymes. Participants will do a restriction enzyme digestion of plasmid DNA, then separate the DNA fragments electrophoretically on an agarose gel. The results simulate a DNA profile and demonstrate how this type of evidence is prepared and interpreted.
Protein Gel Electrophoresis
Sunday, October 14, 2007, 9 am - 2 pm (registration starts at 8:15 am)
In-Service Hours: 5
We will separate a mixture of proteins from a variety of meat samples (fishes, mammals, poultry and/or sea foods) using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). Evidence for evolutionary relatedness amongst organisms can be determined using this technique. Participants will develop an experimental design, prepare samples of muscle tissue, observe the process of electrophoresis and analyze their results by comparing protein bands according to their molecular weights on the gel.
